"Story Of The Door" Reaction

While reading the 1st chapter, "The Story Of The Door", in the book The Strange Case of Dr.Jeckyll and Mr.Hyde there was one passage that stood out to me most. After Mr.Enfield finishes his story about the door, Mr. Utterson asks Mr.Enfield to explain Mr.Hyde. And Mr. Enfield's reply shocks me greatly.
Mr.Enfield explains that Mr.Hyde is not easy to describe, but there was something wrong, wierd, displeasing, but he could just not but it into words. And that Mr.Hyde gave off sense of deformity though none could be seen by the eye. Mr.Enfield ends with saying that there was just no words for Mr.Hyde and it was not because lack of memory because he could recall the moment right then and there.
I remeber that during class we talked about how society was diffrent in the victorian age, that apperence, manners, and ego were a big thing. And this made me think about this passage, and that Mr.Hyde most likely was not deformed, and he was probably just a bit diffrent, shy, and weird, but that at tops. But Altough he had little manners, and he did not care all that much for his apperence and ego he was seen as deformed and unexplainable. This really made me realize how cruel the victorian age might have been. One wrong discion or bad outfit could ruin your reputation and could severly damage your personal life for a long time. The overall theme, i feel, is that reputation, apperence, and manners in the victorian age could make or brake you.

  1. I agree with you about your opinion of how important looks are in the Victorian Age and how one deformity can drastically change how someone thinks of a person. And that may be the reason Mr.Hyde is noticed ny anyonebecause they move right past him.

  3. i think this is really well written, and i feel like in that society that the fact the hyde was being rude was more important that he was physically disfigured. like they overlooked the whole deformity but because of hydes disregard for his actions seemed to matter a lot more.
